The band was formed in 2006 by four aspiring young musicians: guitarist William Etling, drummer Jesse Hoy, keyboardist and drummer Michael Hughes and vocalist Christopher Richard. In 2006, after just weeks on the Los Angeles club scene, The Deadly Syndrome was signed to the record label Dim Mak Records, owned by Steve Aoki.
Immediately after being signed to Dim Mak, the band began working on its debut album, The Ortolan, which was released worldwide on Sept. 11, 2007 and produced by Nico Aglietti and Airin Older of the band Sugarcult.
The Ortolan earned kudos from All Music Guide, The Los Angeles Times, The Tripwire, Pitchfork Media, and French rock magazine Les InRockuptibles.
Prior to the album's release, the band toured in California with Dim Mak signees Oh No! Oh My! and Let's Go Sailing. In July 2007, they played several shows with Hot Hot Heat whose frontman Steve Bays cited their sound as one of his new favorites in an interview onRolling Stone
